Celebrating Our Past by Building Towards the Future

On Saturday, October 28th, 2017, the Plaza Playhouse Theater ushered in a new era to take its proud place in history by returning to its original namesake: the Alcazar Theatre.

We celebrate this milestone 90th anniversary with all of you, our theatergoers, patrons, supporters, and community members by kicking off the biggest and boldest Capital Campaign in our history.

Our founder Oliver Prickett’s big dream was to enrich the lives of the community through the theater arts. On April 27, 1928, thanks to his steadfast vision, the Alcazar Theatre welcomed elated Carpinteria theatergoers through its doors for the very first time. And while movies have played an important role in the theatre’s history, the Alcazar is much more than just a movie house.

Since its inception, the Alcazar has honored its role as the center of arts and entertainment for the entire Carpinteria Valley community and beyond. Today, when you come to the theatre, you can attend a variety of movies, musical concerts, theatrical plays, comedy shows, educational workshops and more.

Background

The strength of the Alcazar Theatre was recognized from its earliest days.  Owner, Henry J. Muller invested over $50,000 (approx. $700,000 in 2018 money) to construct a theatre that builder Alex C. D’Alfonso dubbed “as Strong and Sturdy as the Rock of Gibraltar.

Opening night at the Alcazar featured a live band and the premier showing of a comedy “The Fifty-Fifty Girl.”  Admission was $1.10. The opening of the Alcazar prompted telegrams from the likes of MGM and Paramount Studios to personally congratulate the new theatre’s beloved proprietor and manager, who was only 23 years old at its opening.

A Familiar New Name

Every time you enter the Alcazar, you feel the magic and history of the theatre. From the moment you walk through the doors to the moment the lights go down, anticipation grows. This warm and vibrant theatre transports you to other places and other times.

Weekend movies have made you laugh and cry, and offer a family night out without leaving town. Musical performances and yearly traditions like “A Christmas Carol” have left you with a song in your heart. In what feels like some of the most divided and enduring times in our country’s history, we need the Alcazar Theatre in our lives more than ever.

And the Alcazar needs you.

In honoring the glory of the past, just as Oliver Prickett called upon Henry J. Muller, we are calling on the community to help us raise capital to enhance this historic gem of a theatre so it remains a mainstay of art, culture, and entertainment of Carpinteria.

You can help us get there.

Your support will go towards building an expanded backstage and dressing room that will allow us to attract big-name musical acts and performers to the Alcazar. Donations will also help create a beautiful, historical marquee — transforming the theatre entrance and overall view looking down Carpinteria Ave. from Linden.

The campaign will also be dedicated for additional improvements to the sound system, a state-of-the-art digital projector, an upgraded lobby, and help to cover operating costs to keep the Alcazar open for the next ninety years to come.

By returning to our original name, we’re getting back to our roots. We’re getting back to becoming the pinnacle of art, culture, and entertainment for Carpinteria and beyond.

The Alcazar Theatre is managed by Carpinteria Community Theater Inc., a nonprofit locally founded in 1982. The theatre is in the hands of a very dedicated, all volunteer Board  of Directors and staff of community volunteers who are committed to keeping every aspect of the theater arts alive.

Ollie was a big dreamer.

Dream big with us.
